There is strong evidence that fertility drops dramatically during severely stressful situations like imprisonment or war. It is believed that the stressful situation triggers hormonal changes that cease menstruation in order to optimize survival for both the mother and fetus/infant. One study showed that 94% of interred women ceased menses during their internment with all but 9% returning to normal within 1 year after release.
