Acupuncture for Arthritis

October 24, 2008

The older you get, the more likely it is you’ll be faced with arthritis. For many people, the pain of the disease can be managed with acupuncture.

There are many types of arthritis, including the most common: Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid. While the causes may vary in each type, they usually share the symptom of joint pain. They also share another common denominator: potential relief from that pain at the hands of a certified acupuncturist. Countless patients and several studies have verified the success of acupuncture treatments for arthritis.

The acupuncturist will prescribe a course of treatment tailored specifically for each arthritis patient. The number of treatments will vary. Some patients may need multiple treatments in a week; others not as frequently. Many arthritis sufferers may notice improvement after one or two treatments. Typically, it takes multiple treatments to manage severe and chronic arthritis pain.

Instead of drugs, Chinese herbs may also be prescribed for arthritis patients. There are many herbal formulas known to help ease arthritic symptoms. The acupuncturist may advise patents on which herbs would be best for them. Other changes in lifestyle may be necessary as well. Overweight people will be advised to go on a diet because extra pounds cause joint stress. Patients should consume certain foods, including fish and cherries, that contain anti-inflammatories. With an experienced acupuncturist guiding treatments, many arthritis patients will find they can control the disease, instead of having arthritis control them.

But researchers concluded pediatricians should consider a child’s weight when searching for a treatment to headaches. It may be one more good reason to keep your weight, and you child’s weight, under control.
